I am a massive music fan; Spotify is my everything – My Play list is actually called ‘Life’! Not a day goes by without me having my tunes on. That’s why every Tuesday I like to share the musical love with you guys, in a post I call ‘Tuesday Tunes’ – And now that it is December the tunes will be given over to all things Christmassy!
There are some songs that just make me think “Yes, it is officially Christmas now that I have heard that tune”. As part of my research for next weeks post I looked up all of the unpopular Christmas songs, and was somewhat gutted to see my ultimate Christmas tune as the Number 1 worst song! But what does the internet know anyway, these are my top five banging seasonal songs that always help me get my Yuletide on:
Otis Redding – Merry Christmas Baby
Why do we never hear this anywhere? It’s Otis! Otis Redding! What’s not to love?
This soulful tune is so smooth you could be listening to any of his hits, yet the sleigh bells remind you what time of year it is. This is possibly the most underplayed Christmas tune of all!
Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers – Once Upon a Christmas
This song came from a televised 1984 special that I had on a Betamax video tape, that I played over and over again. It has so many good songs on it, but this one just gets me right in the Christmases (totally a body part) That final key change gets me every time.
Bo Selecta – Proper Crimbo
From the sublime to the ridiculous. The most British – and by that I mean quite mad!- Christmas tune there is. Leigh Francis has moved on from the Bo Selecta characters now, but this 2003 hit is still a favourite in our house… Daft video aside.
The Darkness – Christmas Time ( Don’t Let The Bells End)
Whatever happened to these guys? This is another modern Christmas classic that doesn’t get anywhere near as much airplay as it should. It is worth watching the video just to ponder over how Justin ever got into those trousers…and whether he ever got back out of them…
Paul McCartney – Wonderful Christmas Time
Christmas does not officially start in our house until I hear this! My favourite Christmas song of all time – despite being voted the worst by some!
Those opening bars herald the beginning of the season to me and always will; it is what I decorate to, wrap presents to and write cards to. You cannot be sad listening to this song!
So what song do you need to hear for it to be officially Christmas? Are they traditional tunes or silly seasonal favourites?
Let me know in the comments.
